Get to know Eastern Market

When it opened in the 1800s, Eastern Market was a place to purchase hay and wood. These days, shoppers are likelier to be browsing for fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheeses, cookies, plants and flowers.

The market’s rich history and current offerings will be explored during Come Hungry, Leave Happy, Learn Healthier, a 2½-hour tour being offered Saturday by Feet on the Street Tours.

“It will be a strolling, tasting tour, and we’ll give people a behind-the-scenes look at the market while also sharing some history and fun stories,” says Linda Yellin, founder of Feet on the Street. “It’s a diverse and interesting place to be, and you get a feel for the growth of Detroit and the market district as you buy locally.”

9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 3 and June 14. Meet at 9:15 a.m. inside Rocky Peanut Co., 2489 Russell St., Detroit. 248-353-8687
